 Top Ten Steel Detailing Tips

Hello everyone, these are general guidelines for best outcomes in your steel detailing work, structural steel detailing has its own characteristics and difficulties, hence one needs to take in consideration the accuracy, time, and all the time client satisfaction. Here you will find some and not limited to advice for your work.

1. Pay time in reading the design drawing files, read and inspect even simple detail, if you have some past work with this client you may find it easy to follow up the design and get it fast, each design consultant will have special way in the design presentation, even so you must be ready for any type of design drawings. Investing time and effort will help you to minimize or even eliminate the big and errors, and raise RFI (request for information) soon, such errors may break your model down if you for example find that the thickness of base plate is 25mm rather than 30mm at late time this will affect the whole model,, i.e. column web and flanges will be shifted and this may affect your top of steel values.

2. Plan for your model, using a simple sketch or any flow chart software, split your model into simple and countable parts, and understand your assemblies and if any loose parts. By this way you will find it easy to track your progress and double check assembly by assembly clashes.

3. Write any special design consideration in a sticky note and place it in your screen or at any close location, most of errors come from such needs , these include and not limited to special painting, double side welding, side welding, full penetration welding, bolts standards , and any unusual information,

4. Be aware of quick tools, copy and mirror are two of the most used tools in the modeling work  , even their productivity benefits  those tools may harm your work if it is not wisely used, for example if you have a typical rigid frame which to be replicated 12 times, it is a most to double check the first rigid frame ( parts names, material, geometry) before any copying or mirroring task.

5. Find a way to confirm your drawing; this is simple but important, for example draw from the side view drawing and check from the top. It is very important to have all the drawings consistent and reflected in each other.

6. Employ your judgment, even you receive a well-produced drawings, still errors may occur, as we discussed at the first point raising the RFI at the start will help in completing the whole idea immediately, even if you reached the half of your work this may occurand you have to use your judgment and figuring out any issue.

7. Start the drawing at early stage, this is funny but may help, draw assembly of your modeled one will help you figure any problem before this assembly interacted with other assembles and increase the problems.

8. Promote your product, your drawings are your product, none of the normal client will take or see your model, so drawings are the important part of your work and it will show how professionally you model your work, imagine that you have a well done model and you send the client misleading drawings, he will not thank you for your well done model but reject the job.

9.  Have your own style, if you a part of company they may already have one, if you individual employ or even freelancer, create your own style in the drawing production and keep in mind to update it from time to time.

10. Challenge yourself, put targets, and stay motivated, generally this type of work may be boring, avoid getting bored, love what you are doing and this will increase your efficiency.
